Interview with Adam Smith (founder of Xobni, hackepreneur) – TDR #2

Interview with Adam Smith, Hackepreneur Extraordinaire

We’re back with a brand new episode (direct download, subscribe in iTunes or RSS, or stream below) featuring a conversational-style interview with Adam Smith, founder and former CEO and CTO of Xobni. Adam left Xobni over a year ago to start looking for his next great software startup idea.

Adam Smith - Founder of Xobni and Hackepreneur We had a great conversation with Adam which lasted about an hour and a half. Unfortunately, the show doesn’t allot itself to including an interview that long. Which is a shame because there was so much useful information… So, we plan on releasing the longer version which includes more thought-provoking discussion around software patents, speech recognition technologies, identity (not calling it 2.0 or 3.0) and more! Big thanks to Adam for coming on the show! You can follow Adam on twitter (@asmith) and definitely check out his blog for some great information on startups, recruiting, life-hacks and more.

Some of the topics discussed & included in Episode #2 are:

  • The problems with speech recognition (hint: academia, patents and more)
  • Y Combinator
  • Whether there’s a model for something (program?) that lies between starting a company versus joining a startup
  • Solving the problems associated with pairing up people with ideas with the hackers who can turn it into a product
  • Issues with the current business models in the recruiting and online dating markets — both share similar structural properties — and what signals that are already available (but ignored) that could be used to create better business models
  • Spectrums of software business models (scratching a small niche vs big itches that can create a sustainable business)
  • The #1 reason users don’t want your product. ;)
  • A whole lot more
Don’t forget to listen for the Dysfunctional #Fractoid trivia question which Adam comes up a fun question for anyone that has been in tech for a while. The first person to send the answer (Jeopardy-style) to @thedocrep using the hashtag #fractoid wins a free license for Smart Diary Suite Home Edition, an awesome app that not only helps you get organized — it helps you track and understand the patterns in your life.

Techies Treasure Chest

Ryan’s pick was another awesome web-comic for developers. This time it comes from Component Owl (makers of Better ListView for .NET) called “Owl’s Components”. Meanwhile I choose Belarc Advisor and AppCrashView (from Nirsoft); two great free applications that software developers, support staff, IT pros, and techies can use to get the information needed for troubleshooting application crashes/problems — in those cases where a screenshot isn’t enough.

Helpful how-tos

Ryan discusses using the acclaimed screenshot tool Screenshot Captor by Mouser of DonationCoder.com to create infinitely better screenshots than Windows’ built-in print screen utility ever could. Plus I talk about using Join.me for those times when you’re trying to help  someone fix a problem with your software. Join.me is a free remote access product from the makers of LogMeIn. I’ve previously written about it in a blog post about teleworking and productivity called: “5 Apps that Make Collaborating & Working at Home More Productive”.

That’s it for this show! Tune in in two weeks for another show with yet another interview you won’t want to miss!

Let us know what you think in the comments or send us your question/comment via mp3 (or text) to loopback at thedocreport dot com for the Worldwide Loopback segment! In the meantime, please make sure you subscribe to the show in iTunes or using your RSS reader.

TDR #1: Nico Westerdale of BitsDuJour on Software Marketing

In this inaugural episode of The Doc Report, Dr. Apps and Ryan interview Nico Westerdale (@nicowest on Twitter) of BitsDuJour (the awesome software “daily deals” site) and Iconico fame. He also has a software marketing blog. Nico was nice enough to shares his thoughts about software marketing, discovery, what works/what doesn’t on BitsDuJour, the app world we live in and more. You don’t want to miss his comments about Mac software either. ;) Huge thank you to Nico for the awesome interview!

We didn’t stop there though… we’ve got some great picks for Techies Treasure Chest, nice Helpful How-tos, and a little Dysfunctional Fractoid as well. Detailed show-notes to follow in separate post. We’ll transcribe some (all?) of the interview as well (accessibility FTW!).

Enjoy the show and *please* let us know what you think! You can stream it below or download it. iTunes and RSS subscription buttons will be added to the site shortly. For now, if you’d like to add the feed to your “podcatcher” or RSS reader, the feed is http://thedocreport.com/feed/podcast/.

Overview of The Doc Report Podcast

“Treat everything like a (software) product — iterate and improve every step of the way.”

When Ryan and I set out to create The Doc Report we agreed that the only way to do a podcast “the right way” is to make sure the production quality *and* content is top-notch. Even though we’re moments away from releasing the first episode (which we think is pretty darn awesome), we still decided to tweak some things to make the show even better. How’s that for iteration! First things first, we decided to remove the news segment (shame too, the segment voiceover/music is AWESOME) since there are so many places to get tech news these days. Secondly, we’ve changed the frequency of the show from weekly to twice a month. If people start banging down the doors for a weekly show… we’ll we’d *have* to appease. ;)

Anyway… here’s quick overview of the segments featured on the show. Please note that not every show will feature all segments. We really want to keep the length of the show to something that doesn’t soak up too much time, ideally episodes will be between 35-45 minutes. That said, we’ll definitely won’t cut an interview short if it’s running longer than expected, as long as it’s awesome!

The Doc Report Podcast Segments

Groovin’ with Geeks
Groovin’ with Geeks is the interview segment (aka the “big kahuna segment”) where Ryan and I mix it up with experts in the software world/community. We’ll be talking with those living and breathing creating software, software marketing, business models, search engine optimization, licensing, distribution, and many other things I can’t even think of right now. Of course there will be more “geeky” (can you even say that about a… tech show?) stuff in there to make sure your appetite is satisfied.

Techies Treasure Chest
The Techies Treasure Chest features our picks/recommendations of tools, apps, services and ginsu knives (no, not really…) that we think you should add to your own techie “treasure chest”.

Helpful How-tos
In Helpful How-tos, we each dish out a (mostly) software-related tip or two to make your life better and easier.

Open Commentary
Open Commentary is where fisticuffs may occur. Ryan and I will trade (hopefully non-lethal) blows expressing our opinion on a relevant topic of concern in the software and tech world. It may get ugly, but it’ll be fun to listen to.

Dysfunctional Fractoids
Dysfunctional Fractoids is our trivia segment. We ask a question and the first person to tweet us (@thedocrep) the correct answer with the hashtags #fractoid and #tdr wins a free software license for a great product. Who knows we may have some other prizes up our sleeves too…

The Worldwide Loopback
There’s no place like 127.0.0.1 and the Worldwide Loopback is where you get to send in your own tips, tricks, questions, critiques or whatever you want and we’ll play them on the show. Heck, you can even upload a video to YouTube and send us the link or send an mp3 recording of what you have to say to loopback [at] thedocreport D0T com. No nasty language. The Doc Report is safe for work!

That’s about it. We have a few more segments up our sleeve but we aren’t tipping our hand(s) yet. You’ll just have to tune in and check out the show notes.

Hope you enjoy listening to the show as much as we love recording it! The Doc Report wouldn’t exist without support from SweetLabs, so a big thank you to all the Sweeties (of which I’m one)!

Thanks!

PS: Don’t let the current logo and site design scare you… We spent all our time making the show great. But of course we’ll definitely iterate and improve the site too.

For the foreseeable future, the theme song for The Doc Report is a song by Dan-O called “Cellular Faith”. We found it by searching (ready for this) “creative commons techno funk”. Big thanks to people like Dan-O who release music, royalty-free using Creative Commons licensing.
